Adding a Tradfri repeater to Philips HUE
Product code: 104.004.08
Ikea has now their own smart home products and they have wide range of products. One of their products is the Trådfri signal repeater. It is a USB power supply with an USB module clicked into it that works as a Zigbee repeater. You can use it to extend your Trådfri connectivity, but you can actually use it for all Zigbee signals. The only thing that you have to do is connect it to your Zigbee network and the repeater will do its work and extends your range or signal. For me this might be interesting to extend my Philips HUE signal to the bedroom.
I switch my HUE light with the normal light switches, but also with the app (or voice command). When I switch off all the ligths using the light switch I will limit my Zigbee network because the lights don't have any power and no longer function as a repeater. This can sometimes lead to slow responses for the lights in the bedroom because they will have trouble connecting to the HUE hub. Another cause might be that one of the bulbs is in a lamp which contains a lot of metal, not ideal for getting a good signal.
Connecting the repeater to the HUE hub works best by using another app where you can enable touchlink like HUE Essentials. The best way to do this is to get your hub and repeater as close together as possible (not more than a few centimeters away) and to avoid being close to any other Zigbee device.
First, reset the repeater by pushing a paperclip in the hole and hold it for at least 5 seconds, the light should now be slowly fading on and off. Now go to the HUE Essentials app, click on the hub and click on the plus button to add a new device. Choose "smart accessory" -> "other". Now you can click the "touchlink" button. You should see the light of the repeater going on and off in different speeds which means that the devices are trying to connect, this can take up to 10 seconds.
The repeater is successfully linked when the light is no longer fading, but just lighting up solid. Now you can disconnect the repeater and plug it in anywhere you think it is needed.
