The motion and vibration sensor is a high-precision acceleration sensor with lots of possibilities. It can sense motion in multiple directions like object vibrations, tilts, and falls. The device can push an  alarm to your gateway, but you can also set all kinds of automations. It is powered by a CR2032 battery and can last up to three years.
Here are some ideas what the sensor can do:

  • See if someone opened the fridge (at night) - tilt/angle
  • See if the washer or dryer is done - stop vibration
  • See if the garage door is open - tilt
  • See if someone opened your drawer - vibration
  • Alert when some one moves your painting or other valuable - tilt/fall
  • Sense glass breakage - vibration/fall
  • Track your sleep - stop/start vibration
  • Monitor the doorbell - start vibration

The sensor has adjustable sensitivity: high, medium, low which can help to reduce the chance of false alarms.

The sensor seems to be a bit limited at first if you just look at it as a vibration sensor. When you know it can sense all kinds of movement it is actually very versatile. The sensor is not so much limited on specific placement so you can monitor a door or window where the standard door sensor will not fit, for example a garage door or a sliding door.

Alternative implementations for a door sensor - doorbell indicator

Product used : Xiaomi Mijia Smart Door & Window Sensor, but any door sensor will do I wanted to know when some one rings my doorbell to notify me when I cannot hear the doorbell, when I am in the garden for example. In combination with a webcam I can see who is at the door when I am not at home. I know that there are products on the market that can fix this, most of them are not visual appealing, are expensive, and/or requires you to pay a monthly subscription. I think my doorbell looks fine, so I do not want to change this, and to be honest: it is more fun to make something yourself! The model of doorbell I use works with two magnetic coils which actuates a metal rod which then hits the bell.
